Country pop from County Cork. Simple Kid won hearts this year with his single Truck On, but please don’t blame him for the Trucker Caps' phenomenon. After all, Ciaran from Cork used to be a T Rex clone in The Young Offenders. His debut solo album has mostly ditched glam for country-tinged pop with shrewd lyrics. The highlight is Average Man, which displays a Johnny Cash-style sympathy with Jarvis' common people and was inspired by a survey in The Sun. Here’s to 2004’s kid of the year.
