A curate’s egg. Bookended by a Ringo Starr-like knees-up and a sound FX comedy number, it would be easy to dismiss the third album by The Bees as the work of afternoon stoners. That would be unfair. Because at the heart of this album is a trio of absolute killers. Triumphant brass and weighty Rhodes stabs on both Left Foot Stepdown and Got To Let Go really kick Octopus into gear. And Listening Man is splendid – a mellifluous vocal floating over more of those righteous horns. Apologies, gentlemen. The Bees – Octopus, released 26 March 07 on EMI.
