Director Robert Schwentke has designs. Grizzled veteran cop, callow young partner - check. Series of visually gruesome murders (victims skinned for their valuable body art) - check. Constant rain and an absence of working light bulbs - check. Loved one’s body part-delivered in a box - no need to check... they’re all here in a hugely calculated, sporadically nastily effective German thriller. There are worse Se7en knock-offs but this is still painting by numbers, a Hollywood calling card without the ability to really get under your skin. Appropriate, somehow.
