Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu is a mexican movie director, that first appeared into the scene with the incredible Amores Perros, a multi junctured movie, full of love-hate close relationships, betrayals and a very interesting photography.
As a mexican, but a very pesimistic critic of what Mexico has been doing in the past years with the film industry, the film for me is considered the best mexican movie ever, leaving Alejandro Gonzalez in a special place into my top ten movie directors. Unfortunately, but logically, Alejandro started to receive global media attention, he did a BMW film, directed a short film in September 11th, received an Oscar nomination for Amores Perros and signed a Hollywood contract to do 21 grams.. I had no idea of what 21 grams was going to be about, and I was quite nervous, the idea that probably Hollywood could prostitute his work was constantly in my head. Yesterday I was happy to find out that all of my negative thoughts were wrong, 21 grams is the movie event of 2003 without a doubt. The anti-hero characters: Naomi Watts as Christina, an ex-junkie that practically lives because of the support of her family, Benicio del Toro as Jack, an ex-con that finds relief in the church, and Sean Penn as Paul, an ex-cheater that now is expecting a heart transplant; truly define this movie made of explosive and sentimental acting. The movie reviews several common places: the meaning of revenge, God gives but God also takes without asking, but not always God equalizes the formula, God sometimes takes more that what he gives. But at the end of the journey life goes on. To all of the characters, in a way, their life simply can't move on, you perfectly see how everything stops, and from there everything collapses. The level of intensity in this movie is suffocating, really, you find yourself in hell, but it is also true that Alejandro put a 300% into working with his actors, and taking out what's best in them, and because of that you find gold at the end of this rainbow. If you ask me, I would give the Oscar to the four of them (Alejandro, Naomi, Benicio and Sean), and this is definitely the excuse the Academy needs to give the Oscar to Sean Penn already. At the end of the movie you see a quote that says "A María Eladia, pues cuando ardió la pérdida, reverdecieron los maizales", this is because Maria Eladia (Alejandro´s wife) lost a child (his name was Luciano), two days after he was born. In a way, this quote englobes this movie, I loved this. The most important part of the movie is the post reflection that everyone is going to have. A reflection about loss, justice, revenge, and appreciating what's true in our lives. So I should probably go on with my life, with 21 grams in my back. Thanks Alejandro. LA
