joy zipper interview

Patience is a virtue if you’re Joy Zipper.

“We were in Vinny’s basement trying to think of a band name and everything sounded stupid,” says Tabitha Tindale. “Then my mom called and Vinny said, ‘What about you’re Mum’s name?’. And I said ‘Joy Zipper?’ – that’s her name. We took a walk around the block and went ‘Joy Zipper… Joy Zipper… Alright!’.”

Unfortunately, not everything has been so straightforward for Tabitha and (musical/life) partner Vincent Cafiso, whose mini album The Stereo & God has just come out on David Holmes’ 13 Amp imprint. It’s a release borne out of frustration - their acclaimed American Whip album, which received rave reviews earlier this year, never actually appeared due to the collapse of 13 Amp’s deal with Ministry Of Sound. After legal wrangles, it’s now slated for a February 04 release.

“We had already finished the album. So for us it felt like it did come out,” says Tabitha now. “People didn’t get to buy it, but that’s not our business anyway.” Vincent agrees: “It was such a hard album to make. But because we did finish it and it got good reviews so we felt like we’d done our job.”

When asked to sum up their sound, Vinny, who writes most of the songs and plays most of the instruments, describes it as “psychedelic religious pop”. So where does the inspiration come from? “You know when you get in your twenties and you think about dying a lot, and it becomes a reality to you?” he asks. “That’s it, I guess. When you’re a kid it doesn’t matter, but as you get older you start to think about it. It kind of went away after I wrote it, which was nice.”

Joy Zipper fuse great pop hooks with quirky production and a joyous kind of melancholia which, when people finally get to hear it, should make quite a splash. They’re currently looking forward to touring: “We’ve never had a band that we like as much as we do now,” says Tabitha. “That’s really our goal, to hone the live thing.”

And then there’s the weird job of promoting American Whip. “It’s almost going to be so long ago that it’s new again!” laughs Tabitha, adding, “You can talk about it now. Right after we finished it, it was kind of…” She grimaces and sucks air over her teeth. “But now we’re so relaxed with it.” Personally, I can’t wait to hear it. Matt Walton 14 November 03

The Danielson Familie. It’s this guy and he has all his brothers and sisters perform with him. It’s sort of based on a Christian rock theme. It’s a bit scary and it’s more culty than anything. It’s really interesting, when he performs on stage he’s like… a tree… I don’t know. It’s interesting.

I’ve been listening to a lot of older stuff like Neil Young’s Harvest. I’ve been listening to that a lot for some reason, and Neutral Milk Hotel.
