On the streets.

Former NYC street punk Dito Montiel reworks his acclaimed memoirs into a Sundance-backed, fragmented, flashbacking mood piece, recalling a fraught, violence-wracked adolescence and guilt-ridden flight from family and ne’er-do-well friends. Finessing his past for maximum dramatic impact frankly cheats the I-was-there urgency and 100-odd minutes with tone-deaf bruisers and bawlers is exhausting; but Montiel’s overlapping, impressionistic editing and a committed cast of young guns and veterans, including Robert Downey Jr as an older Dito, eventually work through some kind of exorcism.

Leigh Singer 01 March 07 rating of 3
A Guide To Recognizing Your Saints, on selected release 02 March 07.
