Pills, thrills and bellyaches. Dealing in large part with the breakdown that Of Montreal frontman, Kevin Barnes, suffered when he relocated from Athens, Georgia (the band aren’t from Montreal: an ex-girlfriend of Barnes’ was), to Norway, much of Hissing Fauna… dances in the face of its depressing subject matter. The album’s first half is an exhilarating rush of euphoric melody, crisp beats and motorik basslines. The intense, 12-minute fury of The Past Is A Grotesque Animal forms its monolithic centre, followed by a series of deranged sex jams approximate to Prince filtered through heavy medication. At one point Barnes pleads “chemicals, don’t strangle my pen”. Sounds like it worked. Of Montreal - Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?, released 19 February 07 on Polyvinyl.
