Under the microscope. Poor Shins. Given their pronounced delicateness, when Natalie Portman proclaimed “The Shins will change your life!” in Garden State, it was hard to suppress the urge to call for a nurse and some screens. Fortunately, the Albuquerque quartet have survived the attention to produce a solid third LP that’s not the assault on the mainstream some feared Portman had presaged. The production is smoother, but when Sleeping Lessons morphs from an opiate dream to a riffing stomp with such exhilarating economy, or Red Rabbits wraps drunkenly swaying strings around yet another firmament-bound chorus, you can forgive an occasional excess of slickness. The Shins – Wincing The Night Away, released 12 February 07 on Transgressive.
