Free Podcast Novel breaks through the genres
As a reviewer of the relatively new genre of free podcast novels, I thought I should start with my current favourite, One Among the Sleepless by Mike Bennett. This goes out in a weekly episodic format and is available free from various sources – www.podiobooks.com (a great resource for free podcast literature) or from Mike Bennett's website, www.oneamongthesleepless.com.

This is a contemporary urban black comedy thriller based in present-day Brighton, England. It starts out as a story of one man’s obsession with his hedonistic and noisy neighbours but rapidly develops into a story which is by turn gripping, sinister and hilarious. The characters and situations are extremely well written and Mike Bennett’s reading and character voicing skills are extraordinary, one could almost say Dickensian. As a listener you are gripped and really care about the lives of the characters which populate this book – who could not be seduced by the charismatic and frightening vagrant, Dusty, or the cheeky charm (or is that grating annoyance) of Gaz and the lads and their hedonistic lifestyle?

The production values and sound quality are very good, and the episode structure is inspired, I love how you are left with a weekly cliffhanger that just keeps you coming back for more. I can guarantee you that this is unlike anything you have heard before. I defy you to listen and not be hooked from the first episode!
