A puff of smoke in London’s Mayfair.

Tucked away in one of London’s most rarefied areas, around the corner from the late Queen Mother’s perfumer, lies Matt Frank’s outside installation, Fooooom!!! To say that it’s at odds with its surroundings would be an understatement.

Despite being a frozen three-metre high puff of cartoon smoke, Fooooom!!! is dwarfed by the Economist and Bank Buildings which crowd in on it. Franks’ sugary white sculpture gently mocks lofty ideals of public art and its stuffy location. It’s as though the real art’s just vanished into, well, a puff of smoke, or as though it might totally disappear if you blink. But its size and glistening solidity lend it a weight contrary to what mere looks might suggest.

Free from the worthiness that public art sometimes feels tied down with, and yet lopsidedly beautiful, Fooooom!!! manages to raise a smile and an eyebrow - perhaps this is what more art that you stumble on by accident should do.
