![]() new talent 2007: ed banger records
Three of the year's hottest artsts on one label. Having enjoyed success managing Daft Punk in the 90s, Pedro Winter decided it was time to give something back. Plugged in to the Parisian club underground, with the numbers of Philippe Zdar, Mr Ozio et al on his speed dial, he launched Ed Banger to showcase the city’s unknown talent. The label has released a succession of club tracks which have defined the last 18 months - Zongamin’s Bongo Song and SebastiAn’s Ross Ross Ross, not to mention the Justice Vs Simian re-rub, Never Be Alone. Each release looks as distinctive as it sounds with rotoscop’d cover art courtesy of SO ME. “I am the ears and he is the hands,” says Pedro. When a drunk Kanye West bum-rushed the stage at the MTV European Music Awards after Justice VS Simian nabbed Best Video, SO ME wittily retaliated with a spoof cover. Thankfully, Ed Banger does music as well as gags. Welcome to Disco 2007… www.myspace.com/etjusticepourtous Although best known for their ubiquitous Simian rejig, Justice’s glitchy tracks have acted as catnip to the blog community. Forgoing the bog-standard press shot, Xavier de Rosnay and Gaspard Auge favour an animated flashing crucifix, thus issuing a divine command to rave. It’s rather appropriate given that apocalyptic, doom-laden bangers like Waters Of Nazareth seem better suited to a mass baptism than a nightclub. www.myspace.com/0sebastian0 With an MC blathering over his twisted electro, SebastiAn very nearly didn’t get signed. A quick realisation that the rhymes were cack but the beats were deadly and he was welcomed into the fold, before building a rep for cut-up, distorted synth-rock via a run of top remixes. Slap bass and disco strings are fed through a glitch mangler on signature tune Ross Ross Ross, updating the rock-techno hybrid of Daft Punk’s Da Funk. www.myspace.com/uffie “I’m like a hot chick that you can’t even touch / I’m this cold-ass bitch and I ain’t ready to suck”. Charming. Freestyling filth over crunk and grime beats, Uffie is a 21st-century B-girl. Her suitably futuristic beat trax are built by producer and beau Feedz, and Mr Ozio. Check her cute gangsta shtick on Pop The Glock, as her rap is shadowed by an autotuned vocal floating eerily an octave above. While the wonderfully profane Hot Chick suggests it’s probably time for randy granny Peaches to retire.
James Cowdery
Justice, Sebastian and Uffie albums all forthcoming on Ed Banger.
