![]() notes on a scandal
Hell hath no fury. Judi Dench’s withered old hag, Barbara, is a Machiavellian baddie of epic proportions. As a lonely spinster whose schoolgirl crush on fellow teacher Sheba (Cate Blanchett) spills into dangerous obsession, she could give any Shakespearean villain a run for their money. And when the object of her desire begins an illicit affair with a baby-faced 15-year-old pupil, she schemes and plots for all she’s worth to use this to her own advantage. Director Richard Eyre, along with Closer writer Patrick Marber, has shaped Zoe Heller’s popular novel into an incisively acerbic look into loneliness and the ambiguous pull of desire. Gold stars all round and, come Oscar time, maybe some gold statuettes too. Notes On A Scandal, on national release 02 February 07.

It was the best film I’ve seen for ages,Parts of the plot and the depth of it are similar to the Prime of Miss Jean Boride, but that’s a compliment, I was transfixed from the moment it started, |
