Walking the line at Sadie Coles HQ. BP (Before Pettibon), the pen was considered an inferior medium for art. Something you did on the way to the main attraction. A sketch. This California-based artist, however, changed that. His work grew out of the early 80s LA punk scene (where he created iconic record covers for punk band Black Flag), and in the past decade it has been revitalised under the gaze of a younger generation. The sparseness of his black-and-white images has been infused with an acre of acrid colour in his latest show at Sadie Coles. There’s a violent fluidity to the work. The canvases are fuller and more developed, but the pieces still have his signature narrative touches and chunks of scrawled text. Warped versions of Batman, Robin, Felix The Cat and retro Americana characters leak through his biting political pieces. Refreshingly, this old dog is still innovating. Raymond Pettibon is at Sadie Coles HQ, London, until 10 February 07.
