Point of origin.

Morden occupies a unique position in the mind of the average Londoner. Situated at the very bottom of the Underground map, often mentioned but rarely seen; it’s an almost mythical place, where the tube terminates, perhaps never to return. Such are the vagaries of the tube's Northern Line.

Quasi-gothic name aside, Morden is actually the kind of nondescript suburban nowhere that will throw up a great band once in a generation, and last year it threw up Good Shoes. The youthful four-piece are the quintessential commuter-belt combo, full of small-town stories and big-time ambitions.

Good Shoes’ own burgeoning appeal can be loosely attributed to fine tunes, a distinctive voice, and good old-fashioned hard work. Jones was at university when he realised that the songs he’d been writing with guitarist Steve Leach – generally jangly, with a bitter aftertaste - were really rather good. Bassist Joel Cox and drummer brother Tom Jones were recruited, the course ditched, and an ambitious touring schedule launched into.

Gigged into submission, audiences also came to appreciate the Shoes’ tunes, and their first three singles sold out swiftly - albeit in limited quantities. Jones is circumspect about their budding success. ‘When we sell some records, that’s when it’ll hit home,’ he says. ‘If we ever actually do.’

Readily identifiable vocals can be invaluable in that respect, and Jones possesses the sort of innocent, tremulous timbre that will infatuate many, if also irritating some. Any suggestion of affectation is swiftly refuted, however. And the evidence is compelling. ‘Tom sounds just the same as me when he sings. It’s pretty scary,’ says the elder sibling.

The previously taciturn Tom, meanwhile, has his own thoughts on the noise now emanating from Rhys on a nightly basis. ‘Terrible,’ he grins. ‘The worst thing I’ve ever heard in my life.’ It must be a Morden thing.

Excellent band!

Although I missed seeing them support Razorlight at Camden's Barfly. I've seen them quite a few times over the last year and have been very pleased!

Long live the Good Shoes! x
