Our top ten albums of the year. 2006. The year that dubstep rumbled out of SE19 into the broadsheets, Myspace was wrongly credited with launching everyone from Lily Allen to the Arctic Monkeys and the kids were doing it for themselves – from underage new rave clubs, to mp3 blogs. We may be living in the age of the playlist, but it’s still been a superb year for the artists’ long-player. These albums defined 2006, but they would have been extraordinary in any year.voices of animals and men Unique and ubiquitous, the album saw English oddity writ large. Another year, another cavalcade of "British Bands" clutching at the straws left in the funeral pyre of Brit Pops demise, whilst the rest of the world allows it's established artists, and the fledglings, to develop.Rant over I would like to offer my top 10 records if I may. 10) Entrance - Prayer of death 9) Oneida - The Wedding 8) Brightblack Morning Light - S/T 7) Howlin Rain - S/T 6) Wooden Wand & The Omens Bones Band - Horus of the horizon 5) Bonnie Prince Billy - The letting go 4) Pink Mountaintops - Axis of evol 3) Archie Bronson Outfit - Derdang Derdang 2) Grizzly Bear - Yellow House 1) Comets on fire - Avatar Believe me when I say I am conscious of the American dominance of my top 10 but I make no apologies for it. I only hope young British musicians are given the time to develop without being pounced on and thrust into the media world as the new saviors of music. Rant over x

The album of the year just has to be 'Angels and airwaves - We don't need to whisper', which nobody else has mentioned. Now that I've mentioned it I hope that more people will agree that this album is an inspiration; so go out and buy it!All the albums that I've seen for album of the year so far are rubbish! Tom Delonge has created a great album here with his supergroup; it is an album to change your life. Tom has said that God co wrote it and I think that is slightly over the top, but it's still the best album of 2006. Like in 'Valkyrie missile' it tells us,"everyone will listen" and everyone should listen to this masterpeice. I hope many others agree with me; if not - go out and buy the record - you won't be dissapointed. I know Zane played their first 2 singles, so listen out for the third; it's a great album with great songs. Go out and buy it!

... is that (among all the blogs, on-line-mags, mainstream and out-of-mainstream-magazines, web radio etc.) there are no longer any opinion leaders. You just have to trust your own ears. My Top Ten are (in this sequence): 1) Scott Walker: The Drift 2) Joanna Newsom: Ys 3) Hans Appelqvist: Naima (you haven´t heard of? Then discover this masterpiece from Häpna Records, if you have any sympathy with my list) 4) Leafcutter John: The Forest and the Sea (deconstructing songs sometimes produces surreal tales of sound!) 5) Johnny Cash: A Hundred Highways (a heartbreaking farewell) 6) Fripp and Eno: The Cotswold Gnomes (CD-download only) 7) Lambchop: Damaged 8) Svalastog: Woodwork (mainly acoustic post-krautrock-anti-new-age-masterpiece from the Norwegian woods) 9) Pierre Favre Ensemble: Fleuve (highly melodic chamber jazz from the old Swiss meastro of percussion drawing time parallels to the music of the 16th century (on ECM) 10) Miki N´Doye: Tuki (the kalimba as lead instrument, and a brilliant mix of african rhythms and Scandinavian jazz/electronic-textures)
