Ghosts in the machine. A lyrical chamber composer with a contrasting taste in brittle electronics, Jóhann Jóhannsson is another of Iceland’s intrepid musical enigmas. The son of a pioneering computer boffin, Jóhannsson discovered recordings of the 1964 eponymous IBM dinosaur in his father’s loft and, taking the tapes (operational instructions delivered in crisp Open University English, or simple, baleful electronic tones) as starting points, wrote accompanying arrangements for a swirling, tumultuous 60-piece orchestra. The results are nothing short of sublime: a heart-rending elegy for the hitherto untapped spirit of vanished cybernetics. Jóhann Jóhannsson - IBM 1401, A User’s Manual, released 27 November 06 on 4AD.

such a stunning album. Hands down the album of the year. On first listen i cried which has not happend for years when listening to music. My only problem is after it's short 43 minutes you are left wanting so much more.
