Catch the Pigeon.

“Savvy” is a funny word. Usually quite the compliment, it carries a slightly sinister connotation in the world of indie rock, as if the band in question are calculating souls, scrutinising the zeitgeist and tailoring their sound accordingly. The Pigeon Detectives are often described as savvy, and they definitely prefer the complimentary view.

“I think the reason we got so popular so fast is because there’s nobody else doing this,” insists singer Matt Bowman, somewhat hungover following a night out with the Kaiser Chiefs. “There are a lot of bands trying to overcomplicate things, writing ten-minute w**ky solos. We just picked up guitars and wrote three-minute pop songs. Then cut them in half.”

The Detectives, from Rothwell, near Leeds, have been playing some high-profile European dates with the Chiefs, whose drummer Nick Hodgson is an enthusiastic champion of the band. Not that they really need the help. The youthful five-piece have generated a healthy buzz ever since a bad review two years back led them to start culling the setlist on a regular basis.

Their first single eventually emerged in March this year - the rollicking, anthemic I’m Not Sorry - and sold out its limited vinyl run within hours. “We only got one copy from the label,” recalls Bowman. “If I’d known I’d have bought a few more to sell on eBay.” The Hodgson-produced second seven-inch, You Know I Love You, did likewise while their first full release, a riff-heavy shoutalong called I Found Out, recently snuck into the charts at 39. All two minutes of it.

The original tunes are actually written by guitarist Oliver Main, with the rest of the band then chipping in, chopping them up, or ditching them altogether. “If it’s even average, we’ll scrap it,” says drummer Jimmi Naylor. “We might only write one song a year, but at least that means we’ll make a good album.” Let the pigeon-fancying begin.
