Past glories.

Creator and editor of the highly influential American comics anthology, NON, Jordan Crane’s self-styled “picto-novella” is a short, almost wordless graphic novel that begins with an old man, house in disarray, eating breakfast before penning a letter to someone called Elenore. Crane’s simple two-tone panels, reminiscent in style of Chris Ware, tell a simple story of grief and despair as the old man visits a florist and remembers his younger self presenting his sweetheart with a bunch of flowers.

It comes as no surprise that the old man is a widower, and that he is taking his letters and flowers to his wife’s grave. Crane’s story then moves into more fantastical, if nevertheless predictable, territory. But while Last Lonely Saturday is a slight, familiarly folkloric tale, the deceptive simplicity of Crane’s artistry imbues it with a charm and dignity that make it a small, touching pleasure.
