Minimal Max. An erstwhile member of classical sextet Piano Circus, German-born, Edinburgh-based Max Richter’s solo albums walk a fine line between the micro-electronics of Basic Channel, Godspeed-style field recordings and the numinous minimalism of Arvo Pärt. A typical marriage of esoteric and quotidian elements, Songs From Before carries on where 2004’s Tilda Swinton-assisted The Blue Notebooks left off. Thus, measured piano chords, shimmering drones and supine strings wrapping elegantly around Robert Wyatt’s unostentatious readings from Kafka-esque novelist Haruki Murakami, and everywhere incipient pretentiousness is kept heroically at bay. Max Richter - Songs From Before, released 23 October 06 on FatCat.
