Ape shall not thrill ape.

It’s hard to imagine that there’s much of a call for artists like Bonobo in 2006, outside of 3pm slots at Bestivals and Big Chills. Trip of hop and slinky of sample, he produces the sort of white-wine-spritzer soul that once seemed to soundtrack every yuppie bar in the land. Days To Come isn’t entirely without charm – final track Recurring, for example, is as lovely a slice of rolling folk-funk as you could wish for – but its anaemic nature prevents it from being anything more than tasteful aural wallpaper.

Awful review regardless of music taste post 11
comment by toddhought    Nov 30, 2007
I'll have to side against the reviewer in this one as well. Oddly enough, Ketto isn't one of my favorite tracks on this cd, but this is by far one of the best cd's I've ever had the pleasure of stumbling upon. Fantastic work, can't wait for more.

Awful review regardless of music taste post 10
comment by dsworth    Jan 27, 2007
Everyone has their own taste in music, but to hand out this pathetic review to a strong album is sad at best. As a professional writer, I would be embarassed to have written this.

While the album is not the best work ever, it is a strong step forward and something different than previous bonobo works. It moves in a different, better direction while still maintaining some of the prior sound that made Bonobo's music a good listen.

What the reviewer would have you believe is that this is a poor album because he says so- and he uses asinine terms and big words that sound like a review, but really don't say anything about any of the tracks or the music itself. Except, I suppose for the quick comment about Recurring, a nice track for sure(although plucked from a previous album), but Ketto is the star of this album, and I wouldn't have been too surprised to hear something like it on an Amon Tobin record. High praise for sure.

I don't question whether the author likes or dislikes the genre, I'm curious as to why he made this review when he clearly doesn't understand this type of music. I'd also question his ability to make a coherent argument.

I give the review 1/5 stars for good use of pointless lingo.

I can't believe this review. Obviously the guys at Citroen didn't agree with him either. His track Ketto is on the latest sexy Citroen advert.

Bonobo is regarded as a pioneer of this sort of music by his peers and real reviewers of the genre.

Obviously it's not going to appeal to the teeny bopper generation. His music is full of subtleties and space and requires repeat listening to uncover the delicate genius behind his composition and production. His first album could be regarded as chill out, which is something he didn't want to be labeled as and his journey to this latest album has taken him away from that and to something completely independent.

Though I must admit i think his second album "Dial M for Monkey" was the best.

I think it'll take people a while to realize this man's genius.

People should check out some other reviews, there nearly all great.

I have to agree with some of the other posters--the reviewer did a poor job with this review. He is obviously not a fan of the genre. Here's a link to a useful and in-depth review:

c'mon, lets be honest, it's not a great album, it's fine and rather nice, but, its not a showstopper.
for me the vocals are a cool extra factor, especially the track featuring Fink - now that track is gorgeous.

I have this album and conur with Joe Madden. I bought the album before selling it on eBay shortly after. 'Recurrring' was the one track I saved to my iPod. I'm a big fan of chillout/ambient/whatever-you-want-to-call-it and I have to say this album falls into laid-back musics main trap - it's bland.

The only track I've heard is the one you can listen to here so I don't have much of an opinion save that I like the track.

I have other Bonobo albums and enjoy listening to them. I find with this type of music you have to use your imagination to create visual content in your mind to get the most out of it. I guess that's why the music can be relaxing and why this type of music is more impacting when combined with the abstract images found in some tv adverts.

However JoeMadden's review didn't contrast or compare with previous Bonobo's releases or suggest what you might get from this music. It reads a bit like those Q magazine reviews that justify one's music taste and record collection.

I've got a varied and large music collection and most of my favourites have been panned by reviewers at some time. Indeed it's the albums that get one or two stars that often undergo revival in popularity 10 years later and get 5 stars in re-release reviews.

So based on the negativity of the review I'm inclined to give it a listen as a result!

Mikeydread2:
"What's the point in reviewing a genre that you do not like?"
I have nothing against the genre of soulful trip-hop (or whatever Bonobo would prefer his music to be called) and have enjoyed many a smooth slice of sampladelica in my time, but even if I hadn't, why would that preclude me from reviewing this record?
The review was written with the entire BBC Collective readership in mind, not merely those with a particular interest in Bonobo's style of music. A hardcore black metal fan may not be the best person to review the latest Satyricon album if the audience he's writing for do not share his very specialised tastes.

Lukelbl:
You suggest that Bonobo's music is, "Unparalleled in terms of depth and quality of production," which I guess would mark you out as an ardent fan – one whose admiration for Bonobo's music is not going to waver under the pressure of one "misguided" reviewer's "drivel".
I consider myself a similarly ardent fan of, say, TV On The Radio, and would dismiss any review that doesn't mirror my love of them back at me as irrelevant - but if the reviewer in question could demonstrate valid reasons why he or she didn't think the record warranted much attention, then I would have to respect that. I think - I hope - I put forward such valid reasons in my review.
As an aside, your suggestion that I took "30 seconds" to listen to the album is simply untrue - I paid as close attention to it as I always try to do when reviewing a piece of music that somebody's spent a great deal of time working on.

At the end of the day, the review merely represents my opinion, no more, no less - but it's an opinion that I hope is detached and informed enough to ring true with other people. Clearly this hasn't happened in either of your cases, for which I can only apologise.

When you listen to the products of Bonobo's peers, it is evident that his music is unparalleled in terms of depth and quality of production. It's facile to suggests that an artist of his quality has no place in music. I could say the same of 'artists'......but really what's the point, if you can't offer a well rounded review and simple choose to dismiss the album, don't bother, you'll save yourself some time - albeit - 30 seconds that it took you to listen to the album and put this review together and the bbc and I the money spent employing you to write this drivel. I hope you are freelance....hopefully the bbc with reconsider the need to employ you!
