![]() end of the road report 06
A promising start. The Victorian aristocrat and devout atheist, General Pitt Rivers, created Dorset’s beautiful Lamer Tree Gardens as a way to encourage the local folk to do something other than visit church on a Sunday. What better location then, for the summer’s last big musical shindig, The End Of The Road. This is the festival’s first year. Its organiser, Simon, inspired by the simplicity of last year’s Green Man, decided to put his dream line-up to the test. It has a distinctly folk/country vibe (Micah P. Hinson, Jolie Holland, Hush The Many, James Yorkston etc.) but also features big names like Badly Drawn Boy, Guillemots and Ryan Adams, along with a showcase of Swedish music (Sophia, one of the festival’s main organisers is Swedish) at the festival’s Tipi stage, The Bimble Inn. ![]() Sunset and Guillemots. The event is devoid of any corporate tampering: there isn’t a mobile phone logo in sight and there’s a good range of real ale, as opposed to one brand of larger. There’s also the Somerset Cider Bus of Glastonbury fame and a fine selection of organic food, to complement the distinctive line-up, where the organiser’s passion shows through. It’s an ambitious first attempt – the site can accommodate 5,000, although far fewer actually attended the festival. However, there were more than enough folk to give the weekend a friendly vibe, and many of the punters lavished compliments on its laid-back atmosphere. Simon has ambitious plans for next year. “I’ve already got bands booked,” he says. “It’s going to be very special.” This is clearly only just the beginning.

I had a great time at the End of the Road festival, and I hope to return next year! I was working as one of the Oxfam Stewards. We all really enjoyed the festival - it had a really laid back vibe and everyone was really friendly. My musical highlights were Josh Ritter, Superthriller, Guillimots, Breaks, Holly Golightly and the indie disco on Friday night! But performance of Oxfam steward Tom McCarthy, on the Bimble Inn stage on Saturday afternoon will go down in legend. Particular thanks is due to the very drunk trumpet player in blue cycling shorts! See you all next year! |
