A disappointing threesome. Omnibus or anthology films never fail either to assemble high-profile filmmakers or prove, at least in part, a major disappointment; this triptych of supposed erotica is no exception. Modern masters Wong Kar-Wai and Steven Soderbergh eagerly genuflect at the feet of their hero, Michelangelo Antonioni, but it’s the old master who stumbles badly.Wong’s typically languorous, sumptuous tale of repressed love between Gong Li’s courtesan and Chang Chen’s lowly tailor feels like an off-cut from In The Mood For Love, no bad thing in itself. Soderbergh undercuts any sexuality with a droll psychiatry session between patient Robert Downey Jr and distracted shrink Alan Arkin that eventually peters out. Which leaves Antonioni’s version of The Emperor’s No Clothes: a pastiche on his earlier masterworks that’s the epitome of vacuous, softcore arthouse posturing. One exchange runs: “I hope you can handle my chaos.” “What kind of chaos?” “Total chaos.” He said it. Eros, on selected release 22 September 06.

Enjoyed watching it with my mum in a friday night in a big good cinema. Mothers and doughters relationship is kind of funny in these areas. We had liked it both, from different sides of life and erotism. A single young woman me, and a happily (mashallah married woman mum with load o experiences she has had enjoying her life... Made me think about where I am emotionally, and found these answers... Was also a good social observation of people coming to cinema, some thinking to see more porn, some young couples waiting for true love stories, you ve got mail types.. As for the in the mood for love, yes, it is like a bit, but, I think this is more cultural affair, if in a culture, people act in a certain way waiting desperatly, loving desperatly, being hurt desperatly, they act in that way.. Was happy to see it. |
