Supersonic chronicler. Twenty-year-old Southend native Sam Duckworth is the 90-pound weakling behind the Superman-styled alias, but there’s nothing remotely weedy about Get Cape’s debut album. Home-recorded, mostly self-produced and largely written during his exhaustive gigging across the length and breadth of the land, it necessarily reflects Duckworth’s experiences: sleeping on strange floors, getting drunk with fans, and dealing with the odd, unenlightened soul challenged by his ethnicity (Duckworth is part Burmese). ![]() The result is a direct and impassioned batch of songs that match his acoustic guitar-driven, unforced confessionalism with skittery broken beats and the occasional brass motif, keyboard line and string arrangement. Billy Bragg is obviously an influence – and Duckworth’s voice has a similar yearning tone – but Get Cape belongs to The Libertines’ generation, so his protests are low-key and personally expressed rather than politically explicit. He’s not beyond the odd self-referential joke, however: “This song is more than a self-indulgent rant,” he sings in Part One of the title track, over harried guitar and parping brass. Really, it’s not a criticism he need worry about.

Last time I saw him his laptop was broken, which detracted from the experience somewhat.

I bought the album the other day too and have been listening to it all week. He played near me last night but unfortunately it was sold out. If you manage to see him though, on the tour you should, hes really great live.

So glad to see a feature on Get Cape this week, its seems I'm slowly falling in love with him. I saw him at Dot to Dot back in May and it took me a while to be won over but now I'm totally smitten. I find his music extremely catchy but also touching in certain tracks. The album should be a good one and I request anyone to go and check him out. Also to persist because you might not like him straight away..
