Symptoms of withdrawal. The latest Philip K Dick adaptation (after Blade Runner, Minority Report etc.), this is probably the most loyal in its recreation of the semi-autobiographical account of the dangers of drug use. Keanu Reeves plays the main character (or characters), an undercover cop whose brain and identity is getting fragmented by his addiction to a near-future narcotic called Substance D. His friends – Robert Downey Jr, Woody Harrelson, Rory Cochrane and Winona Ryder – are all similarly succumbing. It's a film that's both sombre and comical. Visually it's fascinating, as director Richard Linklater has used the “interpolated rotoscoping” technique he first employed with 2001's Waking Life to turn the live-action into animation, the disconcerting, queasy tone of which is perfect for the film's themes. A Scanner Darkly, on national release 18 August 06.
