This week, DJs take control.

Once relegated to faffing about with a record deck in the background of videos while the spotlight shone on his jewellery-laden, lady-dazzling MC mate, the hip-hop producer now stands on an equal footing with the rapper – with the likes of Dre, Timbaland and Madlib actually a bigger draw than many of the rhymesmiths who grace their tracks. UK producers such as The Nextmen, The P Brothers and DJ IQ have followed in the steps of their transatlantic cousins and released records that consign MCs to guest status, with DJ IQ’s beautifully funky Welcome 2 The Circus EP (Mancan Music) boasting drafted-in verbals from Foreign Beggars, Kaspa and Dubbledge.

Outkast roll back into action this week, sounding as ever slightly less amazing than certain excitable sections of the media would have you believe, but pretty damn ace nonetheless. The Mighty O (Zomba) is the first track to be released from the soundtrack to their upcoming movie Idlewild, and manages to weave together minimalist crunk beats, hi-octane wiseguy wordplay and the hook from Cab Calloway’s Minnie The Moocher.

Finally, we have two singer-songwriter women on a bittersweet, uptempo balladry tip. Cerys Matthews – ex Catatonia frontwoman – shows her voice to be as gorgeously fag-damaged as ever on the country-tinged shuffle of Open Roads (Rough Trade), while New York’s Joan As Policewoman plays it dark and enticing on the noirish Eternal Flame (Reveal). And no, it’s not a cover of the classic Bangles swooner, sadly. Never mind, there's a mp3 of Anyone available at the artist website.
