From Russia with love. The Russian-born belle of NYC’s anti-folk ball has reined-in her celebrated eccentricity to deliver a complex yet controlled fourth album of astonishing beauty and perfect strangeness. And it’s full of delicious surprises. Head-bobbing pop lilts are matched with dark stories and absurdist statements, highlighting Spektor’s subversive tendency to twist exquisite sounds into something spectacularly surreal. Hip-hop and rock also get airtime, while Après Moi is a rumbling classical tempest that melds multiple languages with bells, strings and grunting. Spektor’s snowballing talent remains defiantly diverse. Regina Spektor – Begin To Hope, released 24 July 06 on Sire.
