Big fun. With a neat line in excitable punk pop, Brisbane three-piece The Grates have the unfortunate tag of the next big thing to live up to. Their debut aims high but hits the mark, adding quirky effects to the sonic exclamation marks: Appalachian banjo on the stuttering Sukkafish, piano twinkles on Nothing Sir. Spiky guitar pop might not exactly expand the horizons of the mind, but with singer Patience Hodgson’s freewheeling voice, this combines big fun with bigger attitude. Many bands have gone much further with much less. The Grates - Gravity Won’t Get You High, released 17 July on Dew Process/Polydor.
