Quality varies. The toast of the leftfield over the last twelve months, Various – a nameless, faceless collective of producers and vocalists – have left a trail of acclaimed and covetable singles in their wake. Their unique sound – baroque folk over mangled grime – doesn’t quite translate into debut album gold here, though. All the de rigueur sonic trimmings in the world can’t hide the fact that Various occasionally recall the sort of sub-Portishead trip-hoppers who clogged-up the mid-90s with studied melancholy and undercooked melodies. Lows such as the joyless industro-grind of Soho are just about outnumbered, however, by highs such as the effervescent Sir and the gnarly Hater. Various - The World Is Gone, released 09 July 06 on XL Recordings.

Hype has always lead us to all kinds of artists or people, and with the amount of information readily available to us, it is not uncommon to be pointed to "the next big thing" weekly or even daily. It is up to us to decide what lives up to it. This record lives up to the hype.

pretty damn dull if you ask me...stoner heads probably in some grotty dark room in bexleyheath, pulling in favours from singers who drift by in hope of some free studio time...been done before and better by likes of amon tobin, jack dangers, mark clifford..xl trying too hard these days
