It wasn’t the summer of love in Kansas. Director Richard Brooks’ stark adaptation of Truman Capote’s truelife “non-fiction novel”, about two ex-cons who murdered the Clutter family in Kansas, was a sensation in 1967. Brooks had originally hoped to cast Paul Newman and Steve McQueen as killers Smith and Hickock, before settling for newcomer Scott Wilson and former child-actor Robert Blake. But that’s what gives the film its bleak edge, plus the fact that Brooks got permission to shoot in the real Clutter home, hiring local people as extras. “I thought Mr Clutter was a very nice gentleman,” says killer Smith. “I thought so right up to the time I cut his throat." Nasty. Bizarrely, troubled actor Robert Blake was arrested in 2002 for the alleged murder of his wife. Extras None.
