Doves show their dark side. Along with Elbow, Doves linger at the edges of full-blown mainstream success. Something which their accountants might not appreciate but their devotional fans certainly relish, clutching them to their chests, imagining that Doves are exclusively theirs. Darker is six minutes of scuzzy bass and glacial echoes – evocative without overt sentimentality - while Fall From Grace is their most languid and haunting tune yet. Only Your Shadow Lay Across My Life is a jingle-jangle indie throwaway. This is no shitheap of demos, but rather the soundtrack to a peaceful drowning, or a hangover.
