![]() forty shades of blue
Down and out. The excellent Rip Torn plays Alan James, a narcissistic rock promoter living on past glories in director Ira Sachs’ intriguing and difficult Sundance winner. James is a miserable sod and it's no surprise when his trophy Russian wife (Dina Korzun, also excellent) has an affair with Michael (Darren E Burrows), James' son from a former marriage. It's not an easy film to watch; Sachs doesn’t pander to dramatic conventions with his sombre portrayal of an emotionally inept man. His mastery of the medium wins through though, showing tedium, loneliness and ugliness without boring the viewer in the process.Forty Shades Of Blue, on selected release 30 June 06.
