![]() dumplings
Bon appetit. Bai Ling is best known for her exotic appearances in Anna And The King, Wild Wild West and Nixon. Remarkably, Dumplings is the first film that the Chinese-born actress has made in South East Asia. It’s also the first time that Ling gets to show that she’s more than just a pretty face, but a great actress too. She plays an octogenarian woman who has found the secret of eternal youth. Ling describes the macabre action as “a story about the modern-day fascination with beauty. It’s about how far we’re willing to go to look good.” That’s exactly what makes Dumplings so scary. Director Fruit Chan (Public Toilet) makes clear that the choices being made by Ling’s dumpling munching customers are the same ones being made on high streets around the world every day. It’s spine-tingling stuff in the way Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining was petrifying. It just goes to show that the best horror movies rarely need splatter. Dumplings, on selected release 16 June 06.
