Small is beautiful. O, Cinema 16. How do I love thee? Let me count the ways. You take short films I wouldn’t have a chance in hell of seeing otherwise, and put them on shiny discs. You even get the directors to give me commentaries. You’ve scoured Britain and Europe, now have crossed the Atlantic for me. I’m beginning to think you like me too... Yes indeed, another cross-section of award-winning shorts have found a platform on a Cinema 16 DVD, this time spanning the more diminutive works of US directors. The disc covers work from filmmakers including Tim Burton, Mike Mills, George Lucas, Gus Van Sant, Andy Warhol, Alexander Payne and Todd Solondz. Some of them are more profound, telling, or plain better than others, but as a sum of its parts, the disc stands alone in its field. Definitely worth buying. Cinema 16 – American Short Films, out now on Warp.
