This guitar-dominated combo are Philadelphians, but as their extended pieces slowly morph into multi-layered fuzz-drones, think California instead. This sixth album is strong on sludge-heavy melodic grind with acoustic sensibilities poking through, marrying the heavy and the light. Psychedelic vibrations pervade, not least when singer Isobel Sollenberger trills her incongruous flute, creating trance states as the Pond follow a capsule Beatles cover with 18 minutes of beautifully sculpted guitar abrasion. Even when travelling in forward motion they sometimes sound like backwards tape-spoolers. Bardo Pond - Ticket Crystals, released 12 June 06 on ATP.
