Violently happy. A few years ago Hot Chip were an averagely exciting West London five-piece, most of whom met at school. Then something happened. The ubiquity of comeback single Over & Over saw them knocking on the door marked success, like “a monkey with a miniature cymbal”. Their second album continues in a similarly delicious vein, melding wonky electronics, pillow-soft soul and lyrics that manage to weave strange violence into gorgeous soul songs. Just take the title track: “Hot Chip will break your legs,” it lulls, “And chop off your head.” Charming.Hot Chip - The Warning, released 22 May 06 on EMI.
