POPSCENE, Clwb Ifor Bach
by: DrSigismundo  Thursday 11 September 2003
Clwb is in Womanby street in Cardiff, and on Wednesday nights they run one of the best indie nights about. The great thing about indie discos is that you know exactly what you're going to get. You can spot them from the corny names that hark back to golden eras of guitar pop: Popscene recalls britpop of course, but look out for stuff like 'Loaded', 'Resurrection', 'Live Forever', 'Hang the DJ'.

Yup, the people who come up with this shit have no shame. But luckily they do have some decent records. The guys who spin em at Popscene have generally top notch taste; expect Smiths, Pixies, Strokes, Radiohead, Stones etc. It won't tantalise yr most avant-garde tastebuds, but it will make you leap about like a puppy who's just discovered Pete Libertine's stash.

Which brings me to the downside of their music policy: a tendancy to fall for the NME's whims and dalliances. Sadly you may even have to endure the staggeringly shite Cooper Temple Clause.

On the plus side, this does attract a few indie-trendies (a relatively new tribe), meaning you can laugh at their mullets. Generally the crowd is cool - studenty, glammy, up-fer-it, and, mostly, so trashed, so helplessly wasted, that their eyes have turned to Xs and their mascara is dripping down their necks. Because they wanna get loaded, and they wanna have a good time.
