Storytelling and hip-hop beats. The underground – preferably sealed up with concrete – is the best place for most leftfield rappers. But Buck 65 deserves to be brought to the surface largely because he avoids trying to impress us with pseudo-intellectualism, coming across more like a blues drifter with fat laces in his Stetsons. The tracks are full of slide guitar, cowbells and tumbleweed beats, whilst his lyrics paint vivid pictures rife with the Southern Gothic imagery of authors like William Faulkner. He couldn’t rap a Christmas present, but then that’s not the point.
