Chungking – Let The Love In (Tummy Touch)

Chilled out psychedelic summer soul from Brighton’s female-fronted trio. Let The Love In is the second single taken from their excellent We Travel Fast album - it’s a sexy record with a lazy soulful bass groove, a cheery little story over it and the odd Barry White overtone. And you can see them perform live in a Collective session.

J Xaverre – Saturday (Memphis Industries)

Nice kooky pop songwriting from Kenickie’s ex-drummer whose debut album is out in a couple of weeks. Songs with smart production.

The Free Association – Sugarman (13 Amp)

A new single not featured on last year’s criminally overlooked debut. Sugarman is a corker of a cover of a David Holmes favourite, and boy do they do it justice.

Spiritualized – She Kissed Me (Sanctuary)

She Kissed Me (It Felt Like A Hit) finds Spiritualized in a raw, energetic mood. No, really. It’s noisy and joyously simple rock’n’roll. Really.

Barth – The Last Wig (Boss Music)

The new single from the offbeat Parisian songwriter. The Last Wig is unorthodox pop, a bit like The Coral or The Beatles if they were to come from Paris. Hmm.

Alfie – Stunt Man (Regal)

Alfie precede their new long player with this track that sounds a bit Dodgy. As in the band who specialised in melodies and harmonies. Not, you know, dodgy…

Matt Walton 29 August 03

All singles released 01 September 03.
