Raw drums and a voice you can’t ignore. Emma Louise Niblett, Scout to you and me, perfectly captures the “Lord won’t you buy me a Mercedes Benz” aesthetic with her follow-up to 2001’s Sweet Heart Fever. Like Janis Joplin, she has a hauntingly distinctive voice, full of a naivety that’s seen too much. It’s that voice and her raw drumming that this album revolves around, occasionally accompanied by scratchy guitars and ukuleles. Produced by Steve Albini (Nirvana, PJ Harvey), I Am is a soul laid bare with tunes that you can’t help but stop and listen to.
