broadcast 'ha ha sound'

Sticky sweet indie grandeur.

Robert Pollard’s prolific band of merry minstrels are the ultimate purveyors of three-minute, rough-cut and gloriously disjointed lo-fi nuggets, and this 15th studio LP (hot on the heels of last June’s Universal Truths And Cycles) is no exception. Like a rusty Phil Spector left out in the rain then lovingly oiled, the album skips joyously between portentous indie-rock grandeur and harmonious sonic honey, all the while (ahem) guided by Pollard’s sweet Michael Stipe-esque voice. Despite the odd weak spot, Earthquake Glue is a strong cohesive effort - just as you’d expect. (7/10) Alexia Loundras 15 August 03

Guided By Voices - Earthquake Glue, released 18 August 03 on Matador.
