A novel approach at London’s Sartorial Art.

This exhibition is like triple-ply toilet paper: there are lots of layers. The show was conceived by artist Jasper Joffe. The basis of the work is his debut novel, Water, about “a doodling, neurotic, self-obsessed young British artist” called Nathaniel Water. Joffe gave a page of the book to 35 artists to interpret and depict, and the results say as much about the artists’ relationship with Joffe as the novel itself.

The work itself is very varied, from Justin Coombes’ atypical cartoon drawings to Stella Vine’s slap- happy painting of a dog and Matthew Collings’ small geometric wall piece. Many of the pieces include images of Joffe himself – his friends and fellow artists seeing obvious connections between the book’s protagonist and Joffe himself.

The results are good and not so good, but the one thing this show is brimming with is humour and lots of energy.
