A funny German comedy, believe it or not. East Berlin, 1989. Alex (Daniel Brühl) is on a protest march when his staunch socialist mother sees him, has a heart attack and falls into a coma for eight months. Just enough time for the Berlin wall to fall and the world to change completely for East Berliners. When she awakes, Alex tries to hide the truth from her - Coca Cola, satellite TV, Burger King - even staging fake news programmes. All of which might seem slightly silly, but Goodbye Lenin! makes for a touching and, in places, funny look at the momentous changes that happened less than 15 years ago. An interesting and warming film. (7/10) Matt Walton 25 July 03 Good Bye Lenin!, on national release 25 July 03. useful link: www.good-bye-lenin.de
