Revolution with a soulful edge.Itís always a pleasure to hear The Coupís brand of politicised hip-hop, and for their fifth album theyíve upped the ante, recruiting musicians from Audioslave and Gap Band to extend their sound beyond Pamís beats. Boots is in fine voice as always, laying waste to Bush and co but never forgetting to lighten the mood with humour. Thereís also a soulful edge to songs like Ijustwannalayaroundalldayinbedwithyou that wasnít previously evident, while My Favourite Mutiny is a battle of the heavyweights, with Kweli and Black Thought stopping by to incite revolution. Five albums in, The Coup have just made their best since their debut.
The Coup - Pick A Bigger Weapon, released 24 April 06 on Epitaph.
