![]() baroque my world
Love and hate in Hackney. The Transition Gallery in a tower block of studios in the heart of Bethnal Green is the archetypal East London gallery. Expect the obligatory lot of artists fresh from college, the majority of which resemble the emperor’s new clothes. Transition’s debut show is based around the sublime, passionate excess and overflow of the baroque. Don’t expect any Louis XIV here, though. Here instead are 13 artists who work in everything from film to sculpture in a thoroughly modern, over-the-top way. The results are often ridiculous – Jonathan Baldock’s pink oversized knitting needles and giant balls of yarn resting on potatoes, anyone? Nicola Woodham’s naïve and rather uncomfortable videos of topless, arty women making out, perhaps? But all is not lost. Simeon Nelson’s black plywood wall relief plays with the baroque’s ornate decoration brilliantly, while Lee Maelzer’s paintings of rundown building sites, chipped cups behind rails and urban disintegration are stunning moments of calm in a sea of rubbish. This love-hate relationship with new art is what makes a trip to Hackney so entertaining. Baroque My World is at Transition Gallery, London, until 07 May 06.
