 East meets West on Sawhney’s sixth studio album. Trying to pin this baby down is like juggling ice cubes. The follow-up to 2000’s Mercury Prize-nominated Beyond Skin, multi-instrumentalist Nitin Sawhney’s sixth album is a passionate elopement of East and West. Still political as ever, Sawhney slips between pulsing electro and Brazilian house beats to Asian rhythms, exotic instruments and soul, lacing them together into a writhing, energised mass of merged cultures. Despite the odd lapse into coffee table tedium (R&B-based Waterfall is quite literally wet), this is an utterly mesmeric, thoroughly arresting, ambitious album.
