films on tv

This week, Richard is the one and only.

Regular readers will know how much I enjoy TV movie spin-offs and sequels, and Knight Rider 2000 (five Sat 12 July 03 5.40pm) is typical of the genre: blinding. An ageing Michael Knight (a man who does not actually exist) is called out of retirement for one last hurrah (to punish those above the law). Unfortunately his magic car, KITT, has been scrapped. I mean, you’d have thought they’d keep it for the parts, wouldn’t you? But no. This unmissable and enjoyable retread did lead to a new TV series with a new generation of teenage Knight Riders but, sadly, watching it was like having Michael Flatley Riverdance on your eyeballs in football boots.

Highlander III: The Sorcerer (BBC1 Sat 12 July 03 11.10pm) is, without doubt, the best in the excellent series - that also now has its own TV accompaniment as well. It doesn’t have Sean Connery but that doesn’t matter. The lack of a Queen soundtrack, however, is a hard cross to bear. The underrated Christopher Lambert stars as the immortal warrior trying to save the world. If you found a trapdoor into Meat Loaf’s brain – like in Being John Malkovich – his world would look like this. This film lets you be there for a couple of hours. Thank you.

The Neverending Story (five Sat 12 July 03 5.30pm) is a charming kids’ tale with a title choon by Limahl, from popular 80s beat combo Kajagoogoo. It’ll thrill your teenage brother and rock the socks off you in equal measure.

Every generation tends to throw out an unhewn slab of raw talent. It was Elvis in the 50s, Brando in the 60s, Bowie in the 70s, and Chesney Hawkes in the 80s. In fact, the sparky Hawkes combines elements of all his predecessors in TV series spin-off, Buddy’s Song (BBC1 Sun 13 July 03 1.10am). He fair belts out an astounding selection of songs penned by pop god Nick Kershaw. Roger Daltrey also stars, but you get the sense that the tired old duffer is just hoping some stardust will rub off on him. Chesney is the one and only. Nobody he’d rather be. He is the one and only. Nobody can take that away from him. A Classic.

And finally, Tales From The Crypt Presents: Bordello Of Blood (ITV1 Wed 16 July 03 11.20pm) will keep you up all night. This cable-TV spin-off really looks handsome in its celluloid reincarnation, and fair pisses all over the likes of Psycho and The Exorcist. Richard Berger 11 July 03

pay tv choices

American Psycho 2 (Sky Movies Max 2 Tues 15 July 03 1.40am).
Brave sequel to American Psycho. Brave because it’s without any of the original cast, crew or director and bears no relation to the Bret Easton Ellis novel. Or Mary Harron’s film.

Highlander: Endgame (Sky Movies Max Weds 16 July 03 1am).
Sequel to Highlander, Highlander II and Highlander III (see above). A must for completists.

I Still Know What You Did Last Summer (FilmFour Weds 16 July 03 midnight).
If you haven’t seen I Know What You Did Last Summer, don’t bother.

Crocodile 2: Death Roll (Sky Movies Max 3 Thurs 17 July 03 10.45pm).
Could be a follow-up to Tobe Hooper’s Crocodile, but sadly the usually dependable Internet Movie Database is a bit vague on this matter.
