glastonbury diary
by: Alastair Lee editor  Tuesday 01 July 2003
well, what can i say (apart from ouch) glasto was top this year. I had a great time wandering, standing, watching, boogying, peeing, drinking, peeing, getting sun burnt, getting wet, drinking.... etc.

Got there about 2pm on Friday, left a sunny London to arrive in an ominous downpour. Met me mates, pitched the tent (a little too close to a pocket of toilets for my liking) and headed off on a tour off the site. Infact Friday was a day of wandering. Didn't seem to see much other than Yo La Tengo (ace but patchy) a bit of Cooper Temple Clause (agro but unsatisfying), then headed off (on a very windy route to the One World Stage. Then the theme of the weekend started. Tis a ting called reggae man.

The bevvies and 'wandering' were starting to take hold so i can't even remember what the first act i saw was, but soon it was the jamacan ska legends the skatalites. I didn't tink old jamaican squaks like those on early studio one records could possibly still exist but the main Skatalite creature had a beautifully authentic MC patter. And the music was awsome too. People were jumping up and down like a bunch of ravers. Twas good...

(the rest is a bit of a blur. I vaguely remember being thoroughly impressed but undercharmed by REM and seeing a seventeen piece Japanese ska band in the Lost Vagueness Ballroom. Thats it.

Next morning the plan was to head of to the Pyramid fairly early to secure a good spot for the evenings aural extravaganza. After the 'wandering' excesses of the day before we thought we could do with a bit of R and R and besides there was a few decent bands playing. that one called radiohead are supposed to be good right?

So after big breakfast and some more 'wandering' it was off to strake out the territory. As we arrived Jules Holland was boogalooing, and effortlessly woooing the crowd. He's done alright for himself wouldn't you say? Makes the Tube, does a TV show a cool underground music then ends up playning knees-up jazz and drinking bells.

can't be bothered to write any more. The Roots were good though.
