the thrills 'so much for the city'

West Coast sun-fuelled country pop. From Dublin.

Five young Dubliners with lovely hair and a nice line in flares go to California to soak up the vibes. They return, faithfully transplanting lessons learnt from Neil Young, The Beach Boys and The Byrds onto their very own record. The result? One outstanding summer single (Big Sur) and an album full of sleek country-tinged melodies. A sprinkling of Stephen Malkmus in Conor Deasy's plaintive vocal gives the whole thing a much-needed edge - easy listening, but a little too polished and studied for its own good. (7/10) Nadia Shireen 27 June 03

The Thrills – So Much For The City, released 30 June 03 on Virgin.
