9 lazy 9 'sweet jones'

Sunday afternoon jazz breaks from Ninja Tune.

Back after a lengthy break, one of Ninja Tune's original signings offer an amiable set of trippy grooves that make like it's still the mid-90s. Amiable, winding synth melodies are pasted over gentle, lolloping drums, with jazzy bursts of greasy trombone, saxes and luscious flutes. Things go a bit awry when the tempo edges above the legal trip-hop maximum, but for the most part Sweet Jones is Sunday afternoon listening bliss of the first order. (7/10) Pete Marsh

9 Lazy 9 – Sweet Jones, released 23 June 03 on Ninja Tune.
