Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People (PIAS)
Despite the title, these are not conventionally happy songs. The Scots post-rockersí fourth album is an intricate spiderweb of softly spun, cinematic sounds that swell with beauty and intensity. In place of their customary guitar-heavy sonic barrage, is delicate instrumentation. Now, heartbeat percussion, swooning strings, mourning feedback and whispering guitars lend the album an almost ecclesiastical grandeur. While bright dawn bursts of electronica that gradually build to soaring climaxes of sheer emotional release only prove how empty words can seem in comparison. Alexia Loundras 06 June 03

Mogwai - Happy Songs For Happy People, released 09 June 03 on PIAS.
